WordWise is intelligent.
These are not "canned drills". WordWise creates
a UNIQUE drill every time it executes. No two drills
are ever alike and definition choices will always be
different. In subsequent drills, correct definitions for
a previously tested word may test for other usages.
Learning The Right Vocabulary:
Although the verbal SAT is fundamentally a vocabulary test,
its makers have never defined the specific vocabulary on
which it is based. That task has been left to special
companies, which have learned how to prepare students who
can afford the time and fees. Consequently, the verbal
SAT remains a dark mystery and many students find them-
selves at a disadvantage. Many educators have concluded
that students who know this so-called test lingo will go
on to make high scores. Obviously, it pays to be WordWise .
THE WordWise TESTING BASE College Level Category II
WordWise has a large testing base of the words that
prominent Educators have found to be most commonly
used in standardized testing to "trip up" the student.
Adults may also profit from WordWise.
Important Latin-Greek root words, common prefixes and
suffixes are included in this word base. They are the word
building blocks that enable one to understand and use new
words with ease and confidence.
All of the above is supported by another base of several
thousand definitions encompassing different shades of
meaning and other usages. To score high on drills is
to ensure familiarity with the right words and the word
building blocks. WordWise drills are the student's key
to acquiring an educated vocabulary.
NEW Features:
IMPORTANT- Now a listing of all other vague or secondary
meanings associated with the test-word is shown. When
your FIRST selection is correct, you have the option of
retiring that word from your testing base. Other users
will still be tested for the word until they, too, retire
it. At both the beginning and the end of a drill you may
access the " retired " list. If you wish, you may
delete any "retired" words. This will restore them
to your testing word base.

ABOUT WordWise
WordWise first searches the word base. It then constructs an
intelligent, multiple-choice, vocabulary drill in accordance with
parameters previously entered by the user. You will be prompted
for the following information:
1. User Name.
2. Desired Reading Speed. From five to 5OO words WPM.
3. Number of Words in the Drill - From 1 to 1OO.
4. Number of Definition-Choices per Wor. - From 1 to 1O.
Prior to starting the drill, or entering the requested data, you may
utilize the (Function Key)s to look at the results of prior drills or
a bar chart of past scores. Also, a detailed tabulation of all drills
completed by a specific user-name is available.
Default Values:
Pressing (Enter) sets up DEFAULT VALUES as follows:
User Input Default Input
1. Your Name NO_NAME
2. Reading Speed 1OO WPM
3. Number of Test-Words In Drill Tests 25 words
4. Number of Definitions per Word Ten Choices
Measuring Your Reading Speed:
After entering the above data, a message displays. If you pause
and read it and then, when finished, immediately hit (Enter), your
actual reading speed, expressed in Words Per Minute, will be
displayed . Pressing "u" uses this measured speed for your drills.
You may skip this routine by immediately hitting (Enter), when
this screen first displays. The next screen displays the conditions
of the drill..
The time allotted to solve each test-word is a factor of the selected
reading speed and the aggregate number of all of the words comprising
the definition-choices.
Doing An Interactive Drill:
When you are ready, one of the Right Words or Word Building
Blocks displays, while the clock ticks off the allotted seconds and
the timer bar moves across the bottom of the screen. Each line-
number designates a definition-choice. Incorrect choices will result
in the message:
TRY AGAIN.
Wrong selections will be erased. Correct selections will be high-lighted.
Most users find it quicker to use the cursor keys to make selections.
Pressing the (up-arrow) and (down-arrow) cursor keys highlights a
definition and pressing (Enter) or (left-arrow) selects the highlighted
definition. When the selection is correct, the following message appears:
YOUR SELECTION IS CORRECT
The cumulative number of points earned also displays. WordWise tracks
and re-displays missed words. When a missed word is repeated,
it generally tests for an alternate usage of the missed word.
Scoring:
Standardized scoring is accomplished by calculating a possible Total
Perfect Score for each drill. Equivalent points are deducted for each
wrong selection. Accordingly, if the user fails to make a correct
selection, before the allotted time expires, equivalent points are
deducted from the Total Perfect Score.
Perfect Score = Test Size Times Number of Choices Times
The Read Speed Adjustment. %
Actual Score = Perfect Score Minus Equivalent
Points Deducted for Wrong
Selections or Time Expiration.
Note: The Range of the Reading Speed Adjustment
Percent is from where a Reading Speed of
5 WPM = 5%. to where 5OO WPM = 5OO%.
The drills are scored so that you are constantly challenged to raise
your reading speed. For instance, to score 5,OOO points on a 1OO
word drill, you would have to be One Hundred Percent correct in
making selections at a reading speed of 5OO Words Per Minute.
No one has ever reported achieving a score near 5,OOO points.
After The Drill is Completed:
Upon completion of the drill, a Bar Graph of your Learning Trend
displays. After this screen, a detailed tabulation of prior statistics
for the same User-Name also displays.
The next screen prompts you to begin another drill with a different set
of test-words (with the same user-input). Also, at this juncture, you
may choose to cancel and start a new drill with fresh user-input or you
may EXIT the program.
Pressing (F4) accesses the listing of retired words for the specified user.
